Benito Juarez succeeded Maximilian I as ruler of Mexico after he was executed by firing squad in 1867. Juarez was a Zapotec Indian who had been elected president of Mexico in 1861. He was a staunch opponent of French intervention in Mexico and had led the Mexican resistance against the French during the Franco-Mexican War.
