Gordian I, the Roman emperor, came in opposition to Maximinus Thrax during the senatorial revolt. Gordian was a member of the Senate, and he was opposed to Maximinus's policies. He was supported by his son, Gordian II, and the two of them declared themselves emperors. They were able to raise an army, but they were defeated by Maximinus's forces. Gordian and Gordian II were both killed in the battle.
