Before the advent of Islam, Medina was originally known as Yathrib. The city's name was later changed to Madīnat an-Nabī (City of the Prophet) after Prophet Muhammad's death and then to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah (The Enlightened City) before being simplified to its modern name, Madinah.
