Mehmed IV ascended the Ottoman throne in 1648, succeeding his father Sultan Ibrahim. He was only seven at the time, making him one of the youngest rulers in Ottoman history. His early reign was marked by political instability and military setbacks, including the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Saint Gotthard in 1664 against the Holy Roman Empire.
