After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, Schwartz entered Columbia University for graduate studies in physics in 1943. During his time at Columbia, Schwartz developed an interest in theoretical physics and began working on problems in quantum field theory. In 1948, he completed his doctoral dissertation on Theory of pions, a subatomic particle that plays an important role in the strong nuclear force.
