Answer
Menachem Begin was the leader of the militant Zionist group Irgun before Israel was a state. Irgun was formed in 1931 as a response to the British Mandate's policies in Palestine. The group was responsible for numerous attacks on British targets, as well as attacks on Arab civilians. Begin was a controversial figure, but he is also credited with helping to bring about the creation of the State of Israel.
