Mengistu Haile Mariam fled to Zimbabwe in 1991. He had been the president of Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991, and had led the country through a period of great political and economic instability. In 1991, he was overthrown by a rebel group called the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). After his overthrow, Mengistu fled to Zimbabwe, where he was granted asylum.
