Merck & Co. was established as a subsidiary of Merck Group in 1891. However, it was nationalized by the United States in 1917 and later privatized again. Today, Merck & Co. is a separate company, known as MSD outside of North America, while the original Merck Group retains the rights to the name "Merck" in all countries except the U.S. and Canada.
