Meyer Lansky left Cuba in 1959, the year Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution took over the island. Lansky had been a major figure in the Cuban gambling industry for many years, and he had a close relationship with Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. However, when Castro came to power, he cracked down on the gambling industry and expelled many of the American mobsters who had been involved in it.
