Cheika began his coaching career in 2005. He initially coached the Randwick Rugby Club in the Shute Shield competition in Sydney, Australia. Under his leadership, Randwick won the premiership in 2006 and 2008. Cheika's success at Randwick led to him being appointed as the head coach of the New South Wales Waratahs in Super Rugby in 2009.
