The Labour Party is a political party in the Republic of Ireland. It was founded in 1912 as the Irish Labour Party and Trades Union Congress. The party was originally a socialist party, but it has since moved towards the centre-left. The Labour Party has been in government on several occasions, most recently from 1997 to 2011. Michael D. Higgins was president of the Labour Party from 2003 to 2011.
