Michael I was the last surviving head of state who had participated in the Second World War. He was born in 1921 and served as King of Romania from 1927 to 1930, and again from 1940 to 1947. He was forced to abdicate by the communists in 1947 and lived in exile in Switzerland until his death in 2017.
