O'Neill ended his playing career in the USA. He played for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1977 and 1978. The Cosmos were one of the most successful teams in the NASL, winning five league titles and two NASL Cups. O'Neill was a key player for the Cosmos, scoring 31 goals in 72 games. He was also named to the NASL All-Star team twice.
