Steele became chair of the Republican National Committee in 2009, succeeding Mike Duncan, who had been acting chair since June 2007 when Ken Mehlman resigned. Steele was the first African-American to hold this position and the first RNC chair not to have served in the US Government since Mary Louise Smith in 1974.
