After losing control of the provinces of Moldavia and Wallachia, Michael the Brave went seeking an audience with the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand I, in Prague. The two men met in January 1599, and Michael sought Ferdinand's help in regaining his lost provinces. However, Ferdinand was not willing to help, and Michael was forced to return to Wallachia.
