In 2009, Micheál Martin, the Irish foreign minister, traveled to Latin America. He was the first Irish foreign minister to do so. The trip was meant to strengthen ties between Ireland and Latin America. Martin visited Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. He met with government officials and business leaders in each country. He also spoke at several conferences and events. Martin's trip was a success.
