Micheál Martin was elected to Cork City Council in 1985. He served on the council for 11 years, during which time he held several positions, including Lord Mayor of Cork from 1994 to 1995. In 1997, he was elected to the Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament. He has served as Taoiseach, the prime minister of Ireland, since 2017.
