Michel Debré died on 2 August 1996 at the age of 88. He was a French statesman and jurist who served as the first Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic from 1959 to 1962. Debré was a member of the Gaullist Union for the New Republic party and a close ally of President Charles de Gaulle.
