Answer
Mayor's discovery contributed to understanding Earth's place in the cosmos. In the early 1990s, Mayor and Michel Mayor used a new type of spectrometer to search for extrasolar planets around nearby stars. They discovered a planet orbiting the star 51 Pegasi, the first planet ever detected orbiting a Sun-like star. This discovery led to a new field of astronomy called exoplanetology, which studies planets around stars other than the Sun.
