Despite being a highly acclaimed and successful director, Michelangelo Antonioni was never nominated for an Academy Award during his lifetime. This was largely due to the fact that his films were often considered too avant-garde and experimental for the Academy's tastes. However, he did win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival twice, in 1966 for "Blowup" and in 1980 for "The Passenger".
