On 7th May 1917, Edward Mannock, a British World War I flying ace of the Royal Flying Corps, achieved his first aerial triumph in a Nieuport 17 fighter. While assigned to 40 Squadron, he claimed an Albatros D.III from Jasta 11, piloted by Leutnant Kurt Schneider, who parachuted to safety.
