Guatemalan novelist and diplomat Miguel Ángel Asturias was born in Guatemala City in 1899. He studied law and social sciences in Guatemala and Europe, and his literary career began in the 1920s. Asturias's writing often explored themes of social injustice and indigenous culture, and he is considered one of the most important figures in Latin American literature. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967.
