Miguel Díaz-Canel took over as first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in April 2021, following the death of long-time leader Raúl Castro. Díaz-Canel had been vice president of Cuba since 2013 and is a member of the politburo of the Communist Party. He is considered a moderate and is expected to continue the policies of Castro.
