Spanish troops captured and executed Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The troops were led by General Felix Maria Calleja del Rey. They captured Hidalgo in March 1811 and executed him by firing squad in July 1811. Hidalgo was one of the leaders of the Mexican War of Independence.
