Mike Johnson became the 56th speaker of the United States House of Representatives on October 25, 2023. He was elected by the Republican caucus after the previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy, resigned in the wake of the January 6, 2021 storming of the United States Capitol. Johnson is a conservative Republican from Oklahoma and has been a member of the House since 2004.
