Leading a workers strike led to Frunze being sentenced to life-long hard labour. He was a member of the Social Democratic Labour Party and was active in trade unions. In 1905, he led a workers strike in Tbilisi, Georgia, and was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. He was released after the Russian Revolution of 1917.
