Khodorkovsky was a businessman during the Soviet years. He was the president of Menatep, a bank that was privatized in 1995. He was also the founder of Yukos, a Russian oil company. In 2003, he was arrested and charged with fraud and tax evasion. He was found guilty and sentenced to nine years in prison.
