The Ballad of Mauthausen is considered by many to be the best work of Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. The piece was written in 1965 and is based on a poem of the same name by Iakovos Kambanellis. The poem tells the story of a group of Greek prisoners of war who are imprisoned in the Mauthausen concentration camp. The prisoners are subjected to brutal treatment and many of them die.
