After being expelled from the Communist Party in 1970, Zeman joined the Czech Social Democratic Party, which had been founded in 1948 but had been dissolved by the Communist Party in 1949. The Czech Social Democratic Party was re-established in 1989 after the fall of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia.
