Before his presidency, Miloš Zeman held the position of Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2002. He was a member of the Czech Social Democratic Party and served as Prime Minister under President Václav Havel. Zeman's premiership was marked by economic reforms and a pro-Western foreign policy. He was succeeded by Vladimír Špidla in 2002.
