The composer Mily Balakirev started working on his First Symphony in 1864 but did not complete it until 1897. He began the symphony in his early twenties and worked on it sporadically for the next 33 years. He was dissatisfied with the first version of the symphony and decided to revise it. The revised version was first performed in 1897 and was well-received by critics.
