Balakirev had a nervous breakdown which led to his professional sabbatical. This was due to his intense work ethic and perfectionism, as well as his struggles with alcoholism. After his breakdown, Balakirev took a break from composing and performing, and devoted himself to teaching. He eventually returned to composing, but his output was much less prolific than it had been before his breakdown.
