Prior to its renaming as Zaire in 1971 by Mobutu Sese Seko, the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo was referred to as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1960-1971) or Congo-Léopoldville (1960). Leopoldville, the capital at that time (now Kinshasa), gave rise to the latter name.
