Mobutu, the former president of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), died in exile in Morocco. After 32 years of authoritarian rule characterized by corruption and repression, Mobutu was overthrown by a rebel alliance led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila in 1997. While in exile in Morocco, Mobutu sought medical treatment for prostate cancer and other ailments until his death occurred in 1997.
