Gamal Abdel Nasser played a major role in ousting Mohamed Naguib from presidency. He was a leader of the Free Officers Movement, which overthrew the monarchy in 1952. After the revolution, Naguib was appointed president, but Nasser became prime minister and gradually took control of the government. In 1954, Naguib was forced to resign, and Nasser became president.
