Abolhassan Banisadr, Iran's first democratically elected president, held office from February 1980 to June 1981, when he was removed from power through impeachment. He was succeeded by Mohammad-Ali Rajai, whose presidency lasted less than two months before his assassination in an explosion at the prime minister's office in August 1981.
