Hatta went to Dutch schools as his father was a clerk in the Dutch colonial administration and was educated in the Netherlands. He studied at the MULO in Padang, where he was exposed to the ideas of Sukarno and other Indonesian nationalists. In 1921, he moved to Batavia (now Jakarta) to study at the Rechtshogeschool, a law school that was attended by many future Indonesian leaders.
