Mullah Omar is considered a key freedom fighter by the Taliban. He was a founding member of the group and served as its leader from 1996 until his death in 2013. Omar was a Pashtun and was born in the village of Singesar, Afghanistan. He was educated at a religious school and became a mullah. In the 1980s, he fought against the Soviet Union in the Soviet–Afghan War.
