In 1994, Mullah Omar and other religious students formed the Taliban in southern Afghanistan. The Taliban was a fundamentalist Islamic group that sought to impose its strict interpretation of Islam on the country. The group quickly gained control of much of Afghanistan and ruled the country until 2001, when it was overthrown by a U.S.-led coalition.
