The Durrani Empire, founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani in the mid-18th century, held sway over much of what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of India and Iran. Zahir Shah, the last king of Afghanistan, belonged to the Barakzai dynasty, a branch of the Durrani dynasty that had ruled the country since the early 19th century.
