Born in East Haddam, Connecticut, on December 8, 1786, Morgan Bulkeley was the great-grandson of Rev. Peter Bulkeley, the founder of Concord, Massachusetts. He graduated from Yale in 1806, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1809. Bulkeley served in various state and local offices before being elected to the United States Senate in 1851 as a Democrat.
