The German philosopher and theologian Moses Mendelssohn was born in Dessau, Prussia, in 1729. He is considered one of the most important figures of the Jewish Enlightenment, or Haskalah. Mendelssohn's work focused on the relationship between reason and revelation, and he argued that Judaism was compatible with modern thought. He also wrote extensively on ethics and aesthetics. Mendelssohn died in Berlin in 1786.
