Moses Mendelssohn was a German philosopher, who is best known for his writings and ideas on Jews and the Jewish religion. He was born in Dessau, Prussia, in 1729, to a family of Jewish merchants. He received a traditional Jewish education, but he also studied philosophy and other subjects. In 1743, he moved to Berlin, where he became a leading figure in the Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment.
