Abu Bakr, the first caliph of Islam, appointed Mu'awiya as the deputy commander in the conquest of Syria in 634. Mu'awiya successfully led the Muslim armies to victory in Syria, and was eventually appointed governor of the province by Caliph Umar. Mu'awiya ruled Syria for over 20 years, and was the founder of the Umayyad dynasty.
