Born in 1844 in Dongola, Sudan, Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed himself the Mahdi, the prophesied redeemer of Islam, in 1881, sparking the Mahdist War against British and Egyptian rule. He established an independent state in Sudan but died of typhoid in 1885, leading to the defeat of the Mahdist movement the following year.
