Murad I divided his sultanate administratively into two provinces, Anatolia and Rumelia. Anatolia was the older and more established province, and included the Turkish-speaking core of the Ottoman state. Rumelia was the newer and more diverse province, and included the Balkan lands that had been conquered by the Ottomans in the 14th century.
