Adrianople was the original name for the city now known as Edirne, Turkey. It was founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD and became an important trade and military center. In the 4th century AD, it became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, and in the 15th century AD, it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. The city was renamed Edirne in 1923.
