Murad I ascended to the throne in 1362, succeeding his father, Orhan I, as the second sultan of the Ottoman Empire. During his reign, Murad expanded the empire by conquering territory in the Balkans and Anatolia. He also instituted a number of reforms, including the establishment of a standing army and the codification of Ottoman law. Murad was killed in battle in 1389.
