Question 29:What is the connection between Murad IV and the current Turkey–Iran–Iraq borders?

  • His reign's war outcomes roughly laid the foundation

  • He sanctioned a new map

  • He negotiated the boundaries with allied powers

  • He introduced a surveying system

Answer

His reign's war outcomes roughly laid the foundation of the current Turkey–Iran–Iraq borders. In 1639, Murad IV led a campaign against Safavid Persia that resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Zuhab, which recognized Ottoman sovereignty over much of the western and southwestern regions of modern-day Iran. The treaty also defined the borders between the Ottoman Empire and Persia, which have remained largely unchanged to this day.
