Murad V was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1878. He supported the conversion of the Ottoman government to a constitutional monarchy, and he issued the first Ottoman constitution, the Kanun-i Esasi, in 1876. However, he was deposed by a coup d'etat in 1878, and the constitution was suspended.
